Full Professor of Pharmacology

Prof. Katia Varani is Full Professor of Pharmacology and President of the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy. E’ coordinator of the Degree in Physiotherapy, coordinator of the PhD in Advanced Therapies and Experimental Pharmacology, director of the School of Specialization in Pharmacology and Clinical Toxicology. E’ member of the University Quality Presidium and of the Strategic University Center on Gender Medicine.
She has published 333 articles in international scientific journals and author of 21 book chapters (H index = 69, Citations: 14060, Scopus).
Prof. Katia Varani has acquired skills in the field of Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology with research aimed at pharmacological and preventive strategies in chronic inflammatory diseases, tumors and neurodegenerative diseases. The effect of biophysical stimulation in cerebral ischemic stroke is evaluated by studying the molecular and cellular processes involved at the neuronal, microglial and peripheral levels in osteoarticular cells to identify innovative therapeutic strategies. The study of new enzyme inhibitor compounds capable of interacting with the endocannabinoid system is conducted to identify selective inhibitors of the main endogenous cannabinoid degradation enzymes. The characterization of novel melatonin receptor interacting agonists is carried out in order to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effect. New enzyme inhibitors of the histone-deacetylase family are investigated by evaluating their neuroprotective and anti-tumor effect.
