Sabata Pierno is Associate Professor of Pharmacology. Since 2018 is owner of the National Scientific Qualification as Full Professor in Pharmacology, Clinical Pharmacology and Pharmacognosy (SSD Bios/11A). She is engaged in teaching at the courses of the Department of Pharmacy and Drug Sciences at the University of Bari and carries out intense pre-clinical biomedical research. She participated to the organization of many scientific events and was an Invited Chairperson and Speaker at many national and international congresses. She was visiting professor at Vanderbilt University, Osaka University, Leiden University and Uppsala University. She was involved in the coordination of collaborative specialist groups and responsible of funded projects from pharmaceutical industry and research grants admitted to funding on the basis of competitive calls that include peer review. She is Editor and Reviewer for international scientific journals. Her main research topics are: skeletal muscle channelopathies; Myotonia Congenita and new therapies evaluated in animal models. Muscular dystrophy and other genetic diseases: innovative pharmacological therapies. Development and aging of skeletal muscle in rodents: modification of the electrical and contractile properties, role of endocrine factors and pharmacological interventions. Skeletal muscle pathologies due to exposure to drugs, chemicals and environmental pollutants. Effects of lipid-lowering drugs on skeletal muscle function. Muscle atrophy and phenotype transition during hypogravity condition: evaluation of the effect of drugs and nutraceutical compounds. Characterization of neuromuscular function in animal models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis: pharmacological analysis of new therapeutic proposals. Side effects of the anti-COVID vaccine and evaluation of drugs and bioactive substances in anti-COVID therapy. The main results are described in 97 publications in high-impact Journal (3466 citations, H-index 39).
