Lab Manager. Experimental Neurophysiology, Full Professor of Physiology

San Raffaele | IRCCS

Dr. Barbara Picconi carried out her research activity as a confirmed researcher at the Laboratory of Neurophysiology directed by Professor Paolo Calabresi, Santa Lucia Foundation, IRCCS, Rome from 2001 to 2018. Come on early years of her PhD course in Neuroscience (2000-2004) at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Dr Picconi has been involved in the study of alterations in synaptic plasticity in various models of eurodegenerative disorders, particularly in Parkinson's disease (PD). In particular, since 2000 his research has been aimed at studying mechanisms molecular and cellular that underlie parkinsonian symptoms. In 2002 he carried out a period of research at the Neurobiology Laboratory, in the Wallenberg Centre, University of Lund (Sweden) under the supervision of Prof. Angela Cenci. Here he learned motor behavioral tests for the characterization of the parkinsonian and dyskinetic phenotypes following chronic treatment with Levodopa (L-DOPA) in experimental models in rodents. These studies led
to the characterization, from an electrophysiological point of view, of synaptic plasticity alterations associated with development dyskinesias after chronic treatment with L-DOPA, main side effect of parkinsonian therapy. The group by Dr. Picconi, over the course of 15 years of study he studied the various aspects through a multidisciplinary approach pharmacological, molecular and cellular neurodegenerative disorders. In March 2018, Dr. Picconi won the competition for Associate Professor in Physiology BIOS06/A ed she was called to fill the position of Associate Prof at the San Raffaele Telematic University. Since March 2022 he holds the position of prof. Ordinary in Physiology SSD BIOS06/A. Since 2018 he has been responsible for the Experimental Neurophysiology Laboratory, IRCCS San Raffaele, via Val Cannuta 247, Rome. His research activity is now focused on the study of oxidative stress and inflammation in in vitro models on cell cultures of dopaminergic neurons differentiated from human PC12 and/or iPCs or by organotypic rat cultures. In particular, through electrophysiological recordings in amperometry, pathclamp and ultielectrodes (MEAs), integrated with biomolecular and confocal techniques, studies the effect of the application of serum patients in these in vitro models to nalyze their neurodegenerative and inflammatory effects and study the mechanisms cellular and molecular at the basis of the neurodegenerative and inflammatory state.
