Prof. Luciana Giardino graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Naples in 1982 with honours,
obtaining the Specialization in Endocrinology at the University of Modena in 1985, also with honors. Ha
started academic career as a technical officer at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of
Milan. From 2001 to 2014 she was a confirmed researcher (sector VET01), in 2014 she was appointed Professor
Associated with the DIMEVET Department of the University of Bologna, and since 2023 he has been Full Professor.
Scientific activity and lines of research
She specialized in neurobiology and pathophysiology of the nervous system, with a focus on
• Neurodegenerative diseases (multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer, Parkinson);
• Traumatic and vascular lesions of the CNS;
• Development of innovative approaches for neural repair and regenerative medicine.
He has established long-standing scientific collaborations, in particular with the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm (Prof. Tomas Hokfelt) and the Institute of Neurobiology of the CNR in Rome (Prof. Rita Levi-Montalcini, Dr. Luigi Aloe).
His skills include morphological, biomolecular and behavioral methods, applied to models
in vitro and in vivo neurologic interest experimental including transgenic models.
Institutional roles and positions
• Co-founder of the IRET Foundation, of which she is currently President.
• Founding member of the innovative start-up TransMed Research srl, CRO certified GLP by the Ministry of Health.
• Within the University of Bologna, he is a member of the Research Commission of the School of Veterinary Medicine and directs laboratories and research projects of national and international importance.

• Author of over 170 peer-reviewed publications.
• H-index: 41 (Scopus) with over 5,200 citations.
• He has contributed to groundbreaking patents in the fields of neuroprotection, neurodegenerative diseases, and regenerative medicine.
