Ricercatore a Tempo Determinato (lett. A)

Università degli Studi di Napoli - Federico II

Dr. Marco De Martino is a molecular biologist with a strong background in cancer research, molecular medicine, and
biotechnology. He earned his PhD in Molecular Medicine and Medical Biotechnology at the University of Naples
“Federico II” (2017), where he investigated the oncogenic role of HMGA1 pseudogenes as competitive endogenous
RNAs. He previously obtained his MSc in Medical Biotechnology (2013, summa cum laude with honors) and BSc in
Biotechnology (2011, summa cum laude with honors) from the same university.
Currently, Dr. De Martino is a Researcher (RTD-A) at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Medical
Biotechnology, University of Naples “Federico II”. His career includes extensive postdoctoral experience at the CNR
Institute of Experimental Endocrinology and Oncology (IEOS, Naples), where he worked on innovative therapeutic
strategies using non-coding RNAs and nanoparticles to overcome chemoresistance in glioblastoma and studied the role
of RNA molecules in testicular pathophysiology.
His research focuses on the interplay between oncogenes and non-coding RNAs in human cancers, with particular
emphasis on the HMGA protein family, long non-coding RNAs, and pseudogenes. He has coordinated several national
and international collaborations, including projects with research groups in Switzerland, Brazil, and Italy, and contributed
to the development of peptide-based inhibitors targeting ubiquitin ligases.
Dr. De Martino has published 43 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals, covering molecular oncology, cancer
biomarkers, and therapeutic innovation. He has been invited to present at national and international conferences, including
the European Society of Medicine and the Italian Cancer Society, and has supervised numerous undergraduate and
graduate students.
In addition to his research, he is actively engaged in teaching physiology and pathology at the University of Naples
“Federico II” and has held previous teaching appointments at LUM and UniCamillus. He is Associate Editor for BMC
Medical Genomics and BioMed Research International, member of Italian Society of Cancer Research and the European
Society of Medical Oncology. In 2020, he received the “Umberto Pierantoni” Prize from the National Academy of
Sciences in Naples for his work on gene regulation mechanisms.
Dr. De Martino combines rigorous molecular biology expertise with a commitment to translational cancer research,
contributing to the advancement of novel diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
