Associate Professor of Bioengineering
Università degli Studi di GenovaMichela Chiappalone is Associate Professor of Bioengineering at DIBRIS, University of Genoa, Italy. He received his Doctorate in Electronic and Computer Engineering from the University of Genoa in 2003. In 2002 she was a visiting scholar in the Department of Physiology at Northwestern University (Chicago, IL, USA). He obtained a Post Doc position at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT). In 2013 she took on the role of Researcher (Team Leader) at the same institute. In 2015, she was a Visiting Professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center (Kansas City, KS, USA). Since March 2021 she has been Associate Professor of Bioengineering. In 2021 she was appointed Distinguished Lecturer of IEEE EMBS, a company where she currently holds the position of Vice President for Technical Activities. She is the author of 105 articles published in international journals, over 80 peer-reviewed contributions to international conferences, 8 book chapters and has given more than 120 scientific interventions in international/national conferences and research institutes. She is also the editor of 2 volumes.
Prof. Chiappalone's research interests lie in the field of Neuroengineering, with a dual perspective: on the one hand the development of neuroprosthetic devices capable of acting directly at the level of a brain injury to replace the function of a sub-network; on the other hand the design of electroceutical protocols capable of promoting neuronal plasticity and therefore rehabilitating injured networks. She is also interested in exploring new electrophysiological biomarkers of neuropathologies and behavioral recovery, both in animal models and in humans,
related to the analysis of brain signals at different spatio-temporal scales (spikes, LFP, EEG) and the study of connectivity.
