Associate Professor
Università degli Studi di Napoli - Federico IIElisabetta Buommino is Associate Professor of Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology at the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Naples Federico II. Its scientific activity is documented by 98 research articles published in international peer-reviewed journals, 4 book chapters, and 4 patents in the field of research and development of new antimicrobials. His scientific interest focuses mainly on the complex interactions between microorganisms and hosts, with particular attention to the mechanisms that regulate the maintenance of microbial balance and the processes that, under pathological conditions, can lead to infections or alterations in homeostasis. His research ranges from the study of the antimicrobial activity of natural compounds and synthetic derivatives against pathogenic and multidrug-resistant microorganisms, to the analysis of the molecular mechanisms responsible for bacterial resistance, helping to outline innovative strategies to counter it. In parallel, it studies microbiota–host dynamics, evaluating how commensal microorganisms can sometimes pose a potential risk of transmission from animals to humans and at the same time how the microbiota contributes to host protection. This integrated approach allows us to consider not only the clinical impact of infections, but also the fundamental role of the microbiota in human health and disease prevention.
