Macro2Micro - Novel implantable neuroelectronic devices for identification of biomarkers of epileptogenic activity using high-resolution microelectrode arrays

Funding: PNRR

Macro2Micro stems from the innovative technology of Corticale Srl's SiNAPS electrodes, with the aim of advancing research and clinical technologies for epilepsy. The project aims to create a prototype belonging to a new generation of implantable neuroelectronic devices based on high-resolution probes with thousands of closely spaced microelectrodes interspersed with a smaller number of macroelectrodes spaced apart. To facilitate future clinical use, activities to assess the biocompatibility of probes based on SiNAPS technology have also been included. The proposed multiscale electrodes will represent a breakthrough in the understanding of epileptic seizures and therapies, offering innovative mechanistic analysis and strengthening the ability to identify biomarkers useful for developing personalized clinical treatments.

Thanks to the ability to simultaneously monitor high-precision field potentials on a macroscopic scale and

action potentials on a microscopic scale from hundreds of individual neurons, the proposed high-resolution probe

will allow researchers to comprehensively investigate epileptogenic activity, from the macro to the micro level.

Macro2Micro will open up new opportunities for the evolution of current clinical intracortical electrode technologies for

Stereo-Electro-Encephalo-Graphy (SEEG). The ability to detect signals on multiple scales will allow for a deeper

understanding of epileptic disease patterns and treatment effects, providing an unprecedented level of

mechanistic detail.
