Early Identification of Neonatal Cerebral Damage: Study of Neurological Biomarkers and Functional Measures

Funding: PNRR

Our research group is dedicated to the early identification of biomarkers and non-invasive functional measures for risk diagnosis, monitoring and stratification in neonatal brain damage, with a particular focus on hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). We study the molecular mechanisms associated with mitochondrial dysfunction, oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, as well as the potential for neuroprotective agents. Our approach integrates clinical trials with translational research, aiming to improve neuroevolutionary outcomes and contribute to the development of personalized care strategies in neonatal and pediatric populations.

Our research activities find application in various areas of neonatal and pediatric medicine. In particular, the development of non-invasive biomarkers and diagnostic tools could help identify newborns at risk of neurological damage early, allowing timely and targeted intervention. This approach will improve long-term prognosis, reduce complications and guide personalized neuroprotection strategies. In addition, the integration between clinical and translational research offers new perspectives for the development of innovative therapies and for the optimization of care pathways in neonatal intensive care units.
