FULL-MINDSET: FULLy iMmersive vIrtual reality-based cogNitive training in schizophrenia and bipolar Disorder: a single blind randomized controlled trial in a real-world SETting
The project aims to assess the effectiveness of a cognitive remedy intervention delivered through immersive virtual reality (Virtual Reality Cognitive Remediation, VRCR). CEREBRUM software, MetaQuest 3 viewer) in patients diagnosed with Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder (DSS) or Bipolar Disorder (DB). The study involves the randomization of 80 patients into 4 groups of 20 each (20 subjects with DSS assigned to VRCR, 20 subjects with DB assigned to VRCR, 20 subjects with DSS assigned to the waiting list, and 20 subjects with DB assigned to the waiting list). Patients randomized to the intervention group will be given 2 sessions of 45 minutes per week for a total of 12 weeks. The following will be evaluated: the effectiveness of cognitive training through the use of virtual reality on the cognitive performance and psychosocial functioning of patients with DSS and DB, highlighting the differences within the two groups.
The cognitive remedy represents an evidence-based psychosocial intervention in schizophrenia for the vast literature attesting to its positive effects on cognitive performance and psychosocial functioning. Providing them with the support of immersive virtual reality technologies could improve the engagement and participation of subjects, parameters that positively moderate both the very effectiveness of the intervention and its acceptability. Furthermore, further demonstrating the effectiveness of cognitive remedy interventions in people with Bipolar Disorder represents an important research perspective for the implementation and dissemination of this treatment in people with severe mental disorders, even if there is no diagnosis of Schizophrenia Spectrum Disorder.
